weekend picspam

I had a crazy busy weekend, and today I'm home because there was another leak in my flat. (Well, this time leaking INTO my flat).
On Friday I went with JS and her friend KS to see her friend's play "The Jedi Papi Chulo and The Power Pansa" at the Teatro La Tea. I live two blocks from this theater, but have only ever stepped in it once for a Halloween haunted castle, so it was about time I supported it. The play was, well, it was not the best community theater I've ever seen. But it was fun.
Here are a couple of pictures of the set and performance.

On Saturday after teaching I went with
tennisbear to a party in Jersey City. His friend Ken had a 30th birthday party and the crowd was largely composed of Ken's family who are Guyanese, and friends from a gay tennis group that someone told me is called the Liberty Open.
Since I didn't know anyone at the party, people tried at first to figure out where I fit in. One thought I was the bartender, another thought I was with the band. Still a third thought I was a caterer.
tennisbear thought this was hysterically funny in a "black people usually experience this at a white party" sort of way. I blame him, because when I asked how to dress for the party he said I should look like a boy. So I did.
At any rate, I had a great time. They had Guyanese food, which was amazing. The people were friendly, and there was even a live R&B band. Be prepared for bandwidth torture vis-a-vis a number of pictures.
Me with

Yummy Guyanese food

and more food waiting to be revealed

The loo beneath the stairs (I imagine this is what the Dursleys did after Harry moved out)

I was compelled to steal this amazing checkered belt (not a very flattering shot of me, but funny)

The birthday boy

And I made friends with this guy, JC Etheredge, who draws gay erotic cartoons for a living

Then on Sunday I hung out with
pomona513. We went to the Tim Burton exhibit at the MoMA which was AMAZING. But first we went to Murray's Bagels so she could take my picture for a Flickr project. And then we stumbled upon this sweet little bakery called Madeleine Patisserie/La Maison du Macaron that makes delicious little macarons. They were soft and chewy and sweet and the perfect follow up in juxtaposition to the saltiness of our lox-adorned bagels. I wasn't really able to take pictures once inside the Burton exhibit, but I got a few in at the museum. Behold the massive picspam of food and art.
What NYC brought to the world

Strawberry, Raspberry, Lemon and Vanilla (but the lavendar was by far the most delicious)

Behold the macaron rainbow

Sculpture in the lobby

Entrance (without flash)

I snuck a shot in the blacklit room

Burton has such an extensive body of work, and it was evident that his macabre sense of humor was firmly ensconced in his adolescence. The exhibit featured drawings, animation, stop-animation video from his childhood, figurines, models, costumes, set pieces and sculpture. There were also drawings from some of the artists he worked with on his films. It was great to see the development of ideas, especially for the Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, and Beetlejuice, which are favorites of mine. I thoroughly enjoyed it and even felt momentarily inspired to do an art project of my own (right, because I have SO much time and talent). It's well worth the money to see the exhibit.
At any rate, I best be off to get some things done. Hope you enjoyed the pictures. How was your weekend?
