Yah, so I'm going to reserve judgment on EoT until I've seen both parts, but . . . seeing as how I've chatted with a few people today already, I might as well at least say this.
I knew 3 things going in that weren't made public (at least, I think they weren't officially released info): 1 - That the Master's return would look an awful lot like Voldemort's return; 2 - that the Time Lords were coming back; and 3 - Timothy Dalton would be one of them.
Obviously, the timing was slowed down to create a build-up. The "Master race" line was a bit cheesy. But I like cheesy. I also liked the "Sainted Physician" bit. I'm a cornball; I'm not ashamed. The Obama thing was cheesy in a not-so-good way; but having him turn into the Master and the White House press corps was almost worth it. (I'm banking on "grey dress Master" as being Helen Thomas). Oh and I almost forgot the "shimmer." That was a bit too fanfiction-y for my taste. How many times have we seen a "glamour" used in HP fanfic? Oh well, TPTB at BBC seem to like fanfiction motifs of late. Maybe I almost forgot it "accidentally on purpose."
Tennant looked quite yummy in this ep. :o) I wish he'd been given more time to cry in the cafe. That was a good scene that could have been a great scene with just another few moments, I felt. And I loved the look of the Panopticon. The updated outfits were perfect--completely traditional yet higher quality material that added a certain umph to it; and the stadium reminded me (in a good way) of the senate in Star Wars.
The Master thinks he's the center of the universe, but clearly he's not. The Doctor was trying to tell him this; so whatever is going to happen (and this includes whatever importance Wilf will have) has not yet been revealed. Part 1 is just a build-up. This is why I wait before I voice a full opinion. I want to see how all the pieces fall into place.
Now, I had a debate with my friend BE about the regeneration itself and I've chosen to remain spoiler free about it. But I'll finish this entry with a poll. I think that, despite history of past regenerations to the contrary, Matt Smith will appear in the final episode at the end of the regeneration. What do others think? And what did you think of Part 1?
