Tonight I went with my friend DO to see Whip It, and it was exactly what the doctor ordered.
I cannot think of a single thing that I didn't like about this film. The major characters were believable women, full characters or at least reasonable enough snapshots that one could easily fill out in one's mind. The lead was an interesting look at adolescence that sent all the right messages about finding yourself and communicating with honesty and integrity. Visually, the aesthetic of the film appealed to me. The characters looked like real people rather than Hollywood stereotypes. With a kind of edgy 90s punky aesthetic, varied body types and homegrown toughness. It was devoid of schmaltz, had emotional depth, and had a decent soundtrack to boot.
It reminded me of the part of myself I've lost touch with of late.
Go see it, y'all!
