First, family. An extraordinary thing happened yesterday. I was having a delightful evening out at Zum Schneider and when I came home and checked the post, my father and stepmother sent me a check. A healthy check. I opened the envelope when my companion was in the loo, and I started crying I was so moved. When I rang my stepmother later that evening, she told me that my father has been putting some money aside for after I've completed my degree. But they had a chat over the summer and decided to send me a portion of that money now, because they knew I didn't teach this summer and didn't want me to stress over money for tuition, books, etc. She reiterated how proud and impressed they were.

Since I'd had two glasses of beer and several glasses of wine by that point, and was feeling bubbly from the company I'd just been keeping, I was particularly chatty. Per my friend's advice, I told exactly what this money meant to me. I also told her about my dissertation topic, about my creative process, and we just chatted like friends, to the tune of a 1 hr 43 min time stamp on my mobile.

Extraordinary.

Now, food! This is a copy-and-paste of the blog post for my CSA.

So, this past weekend was a whirlwind of activity. And I can't believe it's Wednesday night already.

I went with my friend LG to see Sex and the City for her birthday, followed by tapas. Aside from a couple of amusing lines, SatC was cringeworthy. So sad. And now I have a paella craving, after going to the tapas place.

On Saturday I went with some friends to a Jazz Age party and got to wear my flapper outfit. I also discovered my new favorite cocktail - the French 75. They had dance lessons early in the evening and I picked up two versions of the Charleston. Alas, my pictures came out too dark, but you can aaaalmost make out the two dancers/dance teachers dancing here )

and [livejournal.com profile] drfardook trying to take pictures while the red light EATS HIS BRAIN )

On Sunday [livejournal.com profile] elrina753 and I gorged on DW and Olive Garden and I introduced her to the Mighty Boosh. And then we were off to a BBQ at [livejournal.com profile] macbeemer's place where I ran into [livejournal.com profile] erratic0101 and OMGWTFBBQ [livejournal.com profile] jigglykat was there! Yay.

Then on Monday I finally got to watch the Time Traveler's Wife and OMG I CRIED AND CRIED AND CRIIIIIED. I also had a friend over for tea (PR), luckily before I watched the film!

PR asked me how I was doing, and I first responded with what I was doing (the list above!) and it got me thinking about what one references and communicates. I think keeping busy isn't just some sort of avoidance of empty space or unpleasant emotions for me (at least not at this point in my life). I have come to realize lately how much I need a work/life balance and the enjoyment and fulfillment I get out of interacting with others. I live alone and spend a great deal of time on my own. So I'm grateful to have the time again to socialize with both old friends and new.

Finally, the weekend before I went with the Jew Crew to Princeton. AJ attends school there, and he wanted to see an exhibit "Architecture as Icon: Perception and Representation of Architecture in Byzantine Art" before it closed. I was interested in it too, but also the campus because when else might I get the chance to see the grounds?

I was not permitted to take photos of the exhibit, but managed to get one in of this Basilica-shaped polycandelon that was found in a 5th century Algerian crypt. It struck me as very Burtonesque, especially with the shadow it cast )

I was permitted to take pictures of other works in the museum, however, and these particularly struck me )

this one really caught the ire of AJ and DR, who felt it was exceedingly antisemitic. What do you think? )

Finally, here are some pictures of the Princeton University grounds. I loved the medieval - Tudor feel of the place. Warning: super image heavy )

Well, now I'm at home, kitty at my side, and grateful to have a night at home to finally catch up on LJ. Phew!

ZOMG I might actually have a data set for my dissertation!*

One that personally compels me.

And one that is essentially looking for an academic to give it legitimized weight.

So I can help the community AND get my PhD.

And Somjen agreed to be my outside person if it works.

And she wants to set me up on a date with an acrobat.

And she was excited to meet another researcher!

And we shared gossip and war stories.

And . . .

And . . .

And . . .

ZOMG I'm FLYING right now, y'all.

*([livejournal.com profile] jaynatopia - you and Mila will forgive the bat$h1t crazy hyper excited ear assault from my post-meeting phone call, right?)

Since I'm being all introspective and all, thought I'd take this again. This is extraordinarily accurate, and since Myers-Briggs is considered a valid and reliable test, well worth taking.

Oh, this has lit my geeky fangirl heart aflame. I don't think I've ever seen a fanvid edited so well.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mysduende for the link!

Buffy vs. Edward Cullen, cut cuz the vid screen is kinda big )

Srsly, this alone could make me a Buffy fan.

I'm tired and blue today, flist. The weather is cold and grey and I had an unhappy realization this morning.

So I issue you a challenge, flistees. Reply with something to cheer me up.

So, I'm feeling much much better than I did this morning. I've figured out my dream and am more able to focus. Also, I have so much good stuff to look forward to this weekend - including Red Dwarf and the Doctor Who special. :wink, wink: And hopefully some quality time just hanging with MD is in the stars as well.

Mon amour MD bought the book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies for me last weekend. (Read a good synopsis here). He knew I wanted it. :sigh: so thoughtful. Anyway, I started reading it last night and it does NOT disappoint. To paraphrase [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda and her mocktastic love of Twilight, I love the book so much thus far that I want to snuggle it. The author weaves zombies into the narrative, using 85% of the actual lines from the original book. It's absolutely brilliant.

MD also let me borrow "Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity" by Julia Serano. I've only read a short piece of it so far, but Ms. Serano has a strong and intelligent voice with a compelling writing style. Normally I would not consider reading anything this dense whilst prepping for my exam, but it might actually be useful in considering postmodern feminist arguments.

Work is soooo quite today. I'm hoping my boss didn't invite dramatic irony when she popped her head in earlier and said "Where are all the clients today? It's so quiet!"

Fingers crossed that we coast into 5pm. I'm keen to get home and study. Happy Easter and happy Passover, flist.

I had a super rough night with the diabetes fairy last night. Somehow, it turned out to be a great day anyway.
