My mind is a scary place sometimes
Sep. 22nd, 2008 05:55 pmI think I'm overstimulated, between studying for exams, stressing over the elections, keeping up on the latest financial news, teaching, and disappointing poor Calliope who wants to sit on my lap every time I'm working at my desk.

This week brings us the next mercury in retrograde, and my comprehensive exams are Friday 9/26 and Monday 9/29.
A part of me wants to get the exams done and over with; another part of me just wants to throw up.
Friday I take the basic policy exam. I'm trying to commit to memory the history of Social Security, various low income housing programs, the vagaries of Medicare and Medicaid, intricacies of the Older Americans Act, and their historical, political and philosophical underpinnings as they relate to equity, equality and adequacy and notions of distributive justice. Oh, and did I mention definitions of welfare vis-a-vis Titmuss?
Monday I take the advanced policy exam. I need to be prepared to discuss experimental design, cost-benefit analysis, organizational theory, implementation research, qualitative research and regression analysis and apply them to whatever policy question they throw at me. Oh, and I need to do this within the context of an overarching policy framework such as rational, incremental and political approaches to policy making.
A colleague of mine from India told me students often pray to the Hindu goddess Saraswati before exams. I figure it can't hurt to post her image here on my LJ to sit in the presence of my online home, right? This is also a very pretty image, I hope you enjoy it my flisters.
