Well, I made it through the first day of classes!
Wednesdays are gonna be looooooooooong for me. I can see it already.
My first class starts at 8:30am. The second one ends at 12noon. Then it's a quick lunch and off to the office to log in a few hours. In the evening I teach at NYU from 6:45 - 8:30pm. I have a lot of energy today because the start of semester is always exciting, plus, it's unbelievable but true...my class at NYU is in a building where you go through a Starbucks to get to the classrooms! I have never seen such a thing in my life. Neither, apparently, did my students as they all expressed the same sort of surprise, bewilderment and amusement. The building used to host an NYU restaurant/program venue called the Ultra Violet.
famoustp once read his poetry there for an event I organized when I was an NYU student a thousand years ago. Now it's a Starbucks. Well, it's weird but I can't say I'm complaining exactly. I have the distinct feeling I'll be buying a large extra strong something or other every week just to make it to 8:30pm. :-P
My classes seem interesting. I like the professors so far. My students for the Wednesday gerontology course, however, all seem very very quiet. It was a bit like pulling teeth to get them to talk, and there were only 8 of them so I hope this little quiet trend doesn't continue. My hope is they will have more to contribute once they've actually started doing some of the readings.
Aside from the coursework, I was very fortunate to get a great deal of support this afternoon from the Assistant Dean at my program. We had a bit of a long talk about my LGBT syllabus and how I didn't get a shred of support as I was putting it together. But she lent a kind ear, gave plenty of praise, and gave me some good feedback on what I'd managed to create. I know she thinks highly of me, so at the very least I hope to look forward to glowing recommendations when I go to apply for academic jobs.
Now I'm home, feet up, contemplating whether to get a jump on some reading or do some yoga. Chances are, I'll probably just skim LJ and zone out in front of the telly. C'est la vie.

ubiq31. It's completely subjective, but entertaining. I think my social worker side and my slytherin side show in the full report version.
