Just a few random things
Feb. 9th, 2006 04:52 pmWell, tonight I am going to a panel discussion about Homeless policies and am slated to chat with one of the presenters. I am hoping not to make a complete fool of myself, and to develop a relationship with him so I can look to him to be my "outside reader" when it comes to my dissertation committee. I wore a suit today and everything. :-P My tummy is all in knots. I had a look at his CV online today and holy guacamole is it impressive.
Checking my email, I saw a call for papers on a subject which I wrote about in my Theories paper last semester! So now I'm going to pester my professor about helping me fine tune the paper for submission. I felt so happy when I saw the call for papers. Usually I get these emails and it's all about stuff I have no interest in. So now I'm wondering...do academics research and write stuff and wait for opportunities to come along? Maybe because I'm a student, I'm in a particular situation with this. I dunno. But lately I feel so much more involved and invested in the path I've chosen for myself. It's a really good feeling.
Of course, that doesn't mean life is all roses. My diabetes has been a bit haywire still. Low blood sugars several nights in a row. I'd love to have ONE good night of sleep where I don't have to wake up at 3am to drink juice. Not only is it a drain on me physically, but it ups my caloric intake and shoots my diet to hell. It's just so frustrating because normally I have it under such tight control. But let's face it, sometimes this just happens! It'll pass. I'm not too overly fussed.
This weekend I'll be working on mysadistics Statistics homework, editing that book chapter (yes...STILL) and doing my taxes. But at least I'm meeting up with
gryffin_claw. She wants to get a piercing and I need a new pair of shoes.
So, a lot of people have been discussing the Coretta Scott King funeral.
wolfma and
fidelioscabinet had some interesting commentary. My opinion is, you step into the lions den, be prepared to hear the lions roar and maybe more. The political sentiments spoken were in true honor and spirit and habit of the woman to whom they came to pay their last respects. Mrs. King never went meekly. I hope she rests in peace, thankful for the opportunities this life gave her to make a difference in the world. I wonder if she's sitting somewhere catching up her husband and rejoicing in their reunion. The rest of us, I hope, will look boldly forward with a commitment to bettering the world. I'm a lover of history, but also of movement. It was great when Bill Clinton asked what will happen now to the institution she left behind.
