Yesterday in class I went over with a few students how to research advocacy efforts online and how to write graduate level papers. I don't mind spending time going over these things with students. But it amazes me--being so active online--how some people really have no familiarity with the internet. I guess I've had this assumption in my mind that anyone under, say, 30 and in graduate school would be intimately familiar with looking things up online. Well, now I know better!

After class, a student came up to me to sort of vent a little about the pressures in her life. To my utter surprise and shock, she decided to disclose to me that she'd been sexually molested as a child and just told her family a few days ago and they were not supportive. True to the literature on sexual abuse, her family blamed her for what happened to her as a child. It was horrible to hear her story, and to know that even though she's a social work student she's not aware of either research or supportive services. I was prepared to hear how hard the paper was, how graduate school is difficult for a mother raising a child, etc etc etc. I was not prepared for this. Well, I made her promise me that she would contact the University counseling services and provided her with some brief supportive counseling. This is clearly NOT my role as an adjunct professor, but you know you can't just say "hey, that sucks. bye." I plan to email her a few phone numbers to call for support.

Earlier in the week, I stepped into Paul Hintersteiner's taxi cab. He was funny. He gave me his spiel, and a Thanksgiving card. He tried to recruit me to a training/lecture for his other job doing financial counseling services through Citigroup. The recruitment thing was a little annoying, but mostly it was kind of nice to find one of those true "New York characters" we all know are out there.

Now I'm taking a brief break from working on a paper. It's a relief to have time off from teaching with the Thanksgiving holiday. I can actually focus on MY homework for a change.

Finally, a MEME from [livejournal.com profile] felis_felicis and [livejournal.com profile] wolfma.
